Ranunculus, sometimes known as Persian Buttercup, is actually grown from a bulb, but many gardeners treat it as an annual, to be replaced every year. 'Sprinkles Red' is definitely one worth getting, year after year, with its absolutely stunning, papery looking flowers. This is a compact variety getting only a foot tall. Flowers grow on sturdy stems, perfect for cutting, and removing spent blooms makes room for more flowers. Ranunculus need sun but prefer the cooler temperatures of spring. Thrifty gardeners can try lifting ranunculus bulbs once the foliage has died back, and storing them in a cool dark place, to be replanted the following late winter.
