Watermelon 'Crimson Sweet'

Honestly, growing melons in the maritime Pacific NW is an act of faith, although our summers have been warming up for the past few years, increasing chances of getting mature, delicious watermelons by the end of summer. 'Crimson Sweet' is an heirloom variety with melons ranging anywhere from 10 to 25 pounds each, given ample sun, regular water, and plenty of heat. Some gardeners prefer to grow their starts in hills so the soil warms quickly and the vines have room to spread. This variety is Fusarium Wilt resistant and Anthracnose resistant, but may be attacked by aphids, thrips, or beetles which can be treated with Neem oil.

Common Name: Watermelon

Culinary Uses: Fresh, juiced, frozen. Rind may be pickled.

Harvest Time: 85 days from transplanting. Rind will become dull and impervious to piercing with thumbnail; bottom of melon will turn light green to yellow, stem will begin to dry.

Mature Size: 6 to 10 foot vines; oval fruits are about 12" long, weighing 10 - 25 pounds each
