CloseRainbow Bush, aka Variegated Elephant Food, is a slow-growing succulent native to Africa, requiring a well-lit room and deep but infrequent watering for best looks. Though this specimen can grow into a massive shrub in the wild, it remains a much more manageable size when grown indoors. We planted a 4-inch pot of Rainbow Bush in a large planter several years ago, and it is just about 10 to 12 inches tall and 12 to 18 inches wide. Because of its sprawling habit, this specimen works well in hanging baskets and container planters, acting as both spiller and filler. If the plant gets too unruly, simply prune back the wayward stems. These can be rooted in water to make new Rainbow Bushes and passed on to friends.
