These heat-loving, succulent-like plants produce single and double petaled blooms that open with the sun and close at night.

ClosePacific NW gardens have more than their fair share of sunless days, and moss rose flowers open with the sun, so it may seem an odd choice for this region. That said, the jewel-toned single and double-petaled flowers are so gorgeous, we encourage any gardener with warm sunny spots to try this low-growing, succulent-like annual. Portulaca can handle drier soil once established, so consider planting it in borders where watering is a bit lean or infrequent. 'Sundial' portulaca typically grows four to six inches tall, and can spread up to a foot wide, lending vibrant colors to hanging baskets and container planters as well.
