CloseCommon Ninebark is an underappreciated shrub in the Pacific NW, with captivating foliage, flowers/fruits, and exfoliating bark. 'Darkstar' is a smaller variety of Ninebark with dark purple leaves bordering on black. White flowers stand out against this rich backdrop in the summer, then become red fruits in the fall that birds seem to enjoy. 'Darkstar' typically grows to five feet tall and three to four feet wide, and rather contradictorily, can handle dry or clay soils. Intriguing exfoliating bark is revealed in the fall when the foliage drops in the fall.
