Close'African Queen' phygelius, aka Cape Fuchsia, is in fact not a fuchsia at all, though it produces fabulous coral fuchsia-like blooms from summer into the fall, attracting hummingbirds and butterflies. Cape Fuchsia is a showy but tough perennial that thrives in the sun, goes dormant in the winter, and comes back strong in the spring. This is an excellent choice for large container planters, borders, and even as a garden specimen, growing three to four feet tall and up to three feet wide at maturity. Deadheading spent blooms will encourage reblooming, and cutting old stems back to about six inches in late winter will keep this plant tidy.
