Phormium 'Black Adder'

'Black Adder' is a New Zealand flax cultivar with lustrous, near-black strap leaves that grow to 3 to 4 feet tall and two to three feet wide. In spite of its mature size, this phormium can provide dramatic vertical interest in year-round hanging baskets and container planters when still small. Once it outgrows the container, it can be moved into the garden as a back-of-border evergreen or even a low hedge. Though definitely a sun-lover, phormium looks its best when watered regularly during the growing season. Hardy down to 10 degrees, the foliage may look worse for wear after a cold winter. Simply cut the damaged leaves back down to the ground before new foliage appears in the spring.
