Manzano peppers will raise the eyebrows of many an experienced gardener, as they are unlike any other pepper plants that we sell. Native to the Andes, this variety prefers cooler temps, so some shade may be in order if your veggie garden gets above 70 degrees during the summer. The leaves are large and fuzzy, forming a shrub about three feet tall and wide. Purple flowers produce green fruits that turn a yellow-orange when ripe, and are shaped like little apples. Manzano peppers have a distinct fruity flavor and the walls of the pepper are thick, making it seem more like a bell pepper, but is about on par with serrano peppers for heat units. Best used fresh in salsas or cooked dishes, even grilled, Manzano pepper's thick walls make it unsuitable for drying.
