We'll be the first to admit that identifying a houseplant with absolute certainty is not always possible, especially when it comes to the specific epithet. Peperomia obtusifolia is easy to recognize with its thick, shiny, usually rounded leaves forming a compact mound, roughly a foot tall and wide. However, growers are producing hybrids that are often difficult to differentiate. Case in point, Peperomia obtusifolia 'Obtipan Emerald Isle' seems almost identical to Peperomia obtusifolia 'Obtipan Green,' right down to the barest hint of red edges along each leaf. We carry both here in the nursery and darned if we can tell them apart. The good news is, both varieties will thrive under similar conditions, i.e. moderate to bright light, deep watering when the top soil is dry, and normal house temperatures (60 degrees minimum), so pick the plant that pleases you, and don't worry too much about nomenclature.
