Unlike some other oreganos, this one stays close to the ground, forming a dense mat of golden green foliage that keeps its good looks year-round.

CloseWe typically bring Golden Oregano in as an herb and it is a wonderfully mild-flavored variety, suitable for use fresh or dried. However, this variety, also known as 'Dr. Ietswaart' oregano (a noted expert on oregano plants), may also be used as an ornamental ground cover, growing only three to six inches tall, and spreading up to 18 inches wide. The golden color holds best in full sun and withstands our Pacific NW weather with ease, providing year-round interest. If the plant gets too wide, don't hesitate to trim off stems for cooking purposes. Pale pinkish flowers appear in summer, attracting bees, but as is true of most fragrant herbs, deer tend to avoid it.
