CloseMondo grass is one of those underappreciated workhorses of the year-round garden, partly because of its stature, but also because it requires very little maintenance. Silver Mist mondo grass adds a pop of color to shade gardens and fall/winter plantings with its narrow green and white blades, as well as textural and vertical interest. No, it's not as tall as true grasses, topping out around a foot tall and eventually spreading up to three feet wide, but it keeps its good looks when perennial grasses are done for the year. Pale lavender flower spikes peak out from the grassy blades in summer, then turn into round black fruits. Mondo grass moves easily from shade to sun, in the ground or in container planters. A fun combination to consider is planting this variegated grass with the black mondo grass for a dramatic contrast.
