There are some misunderstandings about catmint. First, it's not catnip (Nepeta cataria), but rather an ornamental perennial (Nepeta x faassenii) that surprisingly is not attractive to cats. Second, it's a lovely addition to sunny gardens with fragrant gray-green, slightly fuzzy leaves and violet blue flower spikes, perfect along borders and in container planters. Bred to withstand the extreme conditions of Canadian winters, 'Dropmore' is hardy down to -35 degrees, is drought-tolerant once established in the ground, and will return year after year. This catmint will grow 12 to 24 inches tall and wide, and its flowers are sterile, so it's easy to contain/control. Shearing back the stems after the initial bloom period (usually June) will keep the plant tidy and will stimulate additional flowers that pollinators love.
