Bee balm does indeed attract bees, as well as hummingbirds, butterflies, and humans. 'Cranberry Lace' Bee Balm flowers are less cranberry colored and more a deep pink, but nevertheless, the fringe-like blooms are a standout in container planters, hanging baskets, borders, and yes, vegetable gardens. This variety is quite compact, forming a clump about a foot tall and wide, and has improved resistance to powdery mildew, a common malady for monardas. Planting it in as sunny a spot as possible helps avoid mildew problems and bee balm becomes drought tolerant once established. Its fragrant leaves and flowers make 'Cranberry Lace' unappealing to deer and rabbits, while adding one more good reason to plant monarda in containers or walkways where humans can enjoy it.
