It's hard to imagine sometimes how large a plant can become, and in some cases, one hopes for maximum growth. The Ostrich Fern, so called because of its green, plume-like fronds, is one such specimen, typically growing two to three feet tall and about as wide, but with the potential to produce fronds that are up to six feet tall. The sterile, upright fronds last throughout the growing season, forming an elegant vase shape, gradually browning out as the cooler weather sets in, then die back until new fronds emerge in the spring. Short, erect, brown fertile fronds grow at the base from mid-summer into the winter. Keep this fern well watered throughout the growing season; it is wet area tolerant and is absolutely stunning next to ponds and water features.
