Lavender is one of those garden staples that seems as though it's been around forever, and is appreciated for its drought tolerance, rugged year-round good looks, and of course, its fragrance. However, 'Otto Quast' Spanish lavender is a relatively new variety, discovered along the California coast in the 1980s. Its dark purple flower spikes are quite stunning against the gray-green foliage, blooming from April up into the fall, bearing pineapple shaped flowers. Spanish lavender typically is not suitable for culinary purposes, however, it can be dried for fragrant sachets and potpourris.
