As our winters have become a bit warmer in the Pacific NW, more and more plants that we treat as summer annuals surprise the heck out of us by sticking around or coming back in the spring. Lantana is one of those tricksters, and we always count its return as a bonus. 'Bandana Cherry' has lantana's characteristic fragrant green foliage (similar to mint) and flower clusters that are primarily a raspberry red with shades of orange and yellow thrown in. Somewhat drought tolerant when planted in the ground, this variety has a mounding habit, growing from one to two feet tall and wide. Lantanas do best in the full sun, but if you're hoping to have it winter over, consider planting it in a container planter that can be sheltered under the eaves in the coldest months.
