Corkscrew Rush always catches visitors' eyes when they spot it on our Green tables. This water-loving plant seems to start as a crazy, spirally tangle of round stems, and indeed, as it continues to "unscrew," it forms a mound up to 18 inches tall and wide, maintaining that same untamed look. 'Spiralis' grows best in full sun but will tolerate some shade, and can handle boggy, wet spots in the garden. Though a bit slow to establish, this rush will spread by rhizomes, so planting it in a container, then sinking that into the ground will control its growth. For the record, we consider this a fabulous addition to hanging baskets and container planters. Semi-evergreen in the Pacific NW, 'Spiralis' can be trimmed back in late winter before the new growth emerges.
