Gardeners with short container planters often bypass sweet potato vines because the foliage soon overwhelms the containers. If trailing plants won't do, consider 'Solar Tower Black' ipomoea that climbs readily up trellises or other supports. This variety has almost black, heart-shaped leaves and will climb anywhere from four to seven feet tall. Direct the lush growth up trellises, stakes, or in the case of hanging baskets, the hangers. Use as a dramatic backdrop for summer bloomers, in containers or in the ground. Construct a tall cone or cylinder out of chicken wire, anchor in a large container planter, and let 'Solar Tower Black' climb up to create a faux cone-shaped topiary. Spectacular!
