Crocuses are usually the first bulbs to flower after the dark days of winter, but hyacinths confirm that brighter days are ahead. This pink hyacinth not only perfumes the air with its lovely scent, but flaunts a bit, with bright pink blooms that stand tall above its fresh green foliage, about a foot tall. As is true of most bulbs, hyacinths put on a show for just a few weeks, then quietly exit until next spring. Grow these in pots that can be tucked away out of sight once the plant is done blooming. A variation on this is to sink the pots (terra cotta works well) in the ground so that the rim is barely visible. Once the flowers are spent, lift the pot from the ground and move to a less visible part o the garden until next year.
