CloseHostas are often our go-to option for shade gardens, if only because of the vast array of colors, sizes, and textures of the hundreds of varieties available. 'Moonstruck Plantain Lily is a middle-of-the-road hosta with narrow, elongated smooth leaves, sporting a creamy interior and blue-green margins. Only about a foot tall and a bit wider, this hosta is a great choice for container planters, hanging baskets, borders, or mass plantings. Its tall lavender spikes are almost homing devices for hummingbirds, so consider placing these where you can watch the bird action. As perennials, hostas will go great guns from spring until the first frost, at which point it dies back until next year. One caveat - slugs love hostas, both as a food source and as a cosy place to hide, so keep an eye out and act accordingly if you start seeing holes in the hosta leaves.
