Some gardeners shun hostas because they die down in the winter and have a tendency to attract slugs. We on the other hand, consider them a gift of spring, and this plantain lily happens to have puckered leaves that slugs sometimes find less appealing. It's positively thrilling to see the gold to cream centered leaves of 'Great Expectations' emerge as the weather warms, opening to a mound of large variegated foliage that will brighten up shadier parts of the garden. Given time, this variety will grow to about two feet tall with a spread of up to three feet wide. Pale lavender to white flower stalks appear in the summer, attracting bees and hummingbirds. Hostas are not the fastest growing perennials and thus make them a wonderful addition to container planters. Plant hostas in borders with other perennials or tuck them between evergreen shade lovers such as azaleas, skimmias, and sarcococca.
