CloseHostas are often our go-to option for shade gardens, if only because of the vast array of colors, sizes, and textures of the hundreds of varieties available. 'First Frost' Plantain Lily grows to only 16 inches tall, but can create a mound of wonderfully textured foliage up to three feet wide. Outstanding in shady borders, mass plantings and container planters, 'First Frost's lavender flower spikes rise up above the foliage in late summer, attracting bees and hummingbirds. Its thick textured leaves are less appealing to slugs than other hostas, and rabbits shy away from this variety as well.
