By the time the fall and winter holidays roll around, gardeners are usually longing for some sort of color, so it's a good thing that Lenten Roses grow so well in the Pacific NW. 'Winterbells' Hellebore (or Winter Bells) is an exceptionally early bloomer, with pale green to white flowers appearing in late fall to early winter. Its thick leathery leaves remain attractive year-round and the flowers stay on their maroon colored stalks well into spring. Growing to about a foot tall and wide, 'Winterbells' hellebore is an attractive addition to container planters and hanging baskets, or mixed in the borders of shade gardens. Deer- and rabbit-resistant, hellebores are toxic if ingested, so please keep out of reach from chewing fur friends.
