We planted a 'Burgundy' India Rubber Plant in one of our displays a few years ago when it was not quite a foot tall. It was heading in the direction of a single trunked tree, so it was cut back (more than once) forcing out new growth from the bottom. As of this writing, this ficus stands about four feet tall and is at least two feet wide, providing a dramatic focal point to an indoor planter containing numerous other indoor specimens.

If you want a specimen-size houseplant, consider 'Burgundy' Ficus elastica. Given time and optimal growing conditions (well-lit room, water only when dry), this variety could reach eight feet in height with an equally impressive spread. It handles pruning well, but will exude a sticky white sap that could irritate the skin of humans or pets. If the lighting isn't quite bright enough, 'Burgundy' may lose its reddish tones but will still be a magnificent indoor specimen.
