CloseEuphorbia, an evergreen sub-shrub commonly called spurge, is one of those "old reliables" that gardeners depend upon for year-round interest. 'Blackbird Spurge' is one of the darkest red-leafed varieties out there, with young red leaves deepening to an almost black red when mature. The intensity of color is best in full sun, so it's a bonus that euphorbia is also drought-tolerant once established. Deer and rabbits don't usually like euphorbia, but bees are attracted to the unique yellow-green flowers that bloom in late spring to summer. Dead flowers can be cut back to the first set of leaves. Wear gloves though, as the sap can be irritating to the skin.
