CloseThe Soft Tree Fern, aka Tasmanian Tree Fern, is one of those betwixt and between kind of plants that is best suited to a large container in our climate. A slow grower up to 10 to 12 feet tall at maturity, it's an impressive addition to the outdoor shade garden, but will not survive our Pacific NW winters. A heated greenhouse or move indoors will keep this Dicksonia happy during the fall and winter, but as the fern grows, it may become too unwieldy to keep moving it back and forth. As a year-round indoor specimen, the Soft Tree Fern will do best in a well-lit room but no direct sun. Airy fronds can grow quite large from a hairy brown trunk which becomes more prominent as old fronds die. Water thoroughly when the surface soil is dry and apply a low-dose fertilizer during the spring and summer.
