Delphiniums, commonly known as larkspurs, have been a garden favorite for literally centuries and is often pictured as an element of English cottage gardens. 'Aurora Blue' larkspur is a product of modern times (a hybrid developed by a Japanese seed company), designed for sturdy stems and small leaves, making it an excellent cut flower. This variety has eye-catching true blue, semi-double flowers with white eyes (aka "bees") that cluster on stems three to four feet tall. Yes, it is advisable to stake the stems when they first emerge, and yes, they're meant to be cut and brought indoors. Grow 'Aurora Blue' in as sunny a spot as possible but at the back of the border if planted in the ground. Cut spent flowers down to the base to encourage repeat blooms and to keep things tidy.
