Smoke trees are often identified in the summer by their smoke-like plumes that follow after the flowers are spent. According to the breeder of the 'Golden Spirit' Smoke Tree, it did not bloom in four years of observation, though subsequent growers have stated that this variety does bloom in the spring, followed by the characteristic smoke plumes. That said, 'Golden Spirit' smoke tree is absolutely worth growing for the foliage alone. Round, lime-green leaves emerge in the spring then change to golden yellow in the summer. Fall weather brings on shades of orange, pink, and red before the leaves fall. This is a vigorous plant that can grow eight to fifteen feet tall and wide, but can be pruned hard in the early spring to maintain a more compact size, though this will reduce the amount of blooms.
