That said, 'Golden Spirit' smoke tree is absolutely worth growing for the foliage alone. Round, lime-green leaves emerge in the spring then change to golden yellow in the summer. Fall weather brings on shades of orange, pink, and red before the leaves fall. This is a vigorous plant that can grow eight to fifteen feet tall and wide, but can be pruned hard in the early spring to maintain a more compact size, though this will reduce the amount of blooms.
