We have been instructed by the Rogerson Clematis Garden in West Linn, OR, that the correct pronunciation of this beautiful perennial is CLEM-uh-tis, as it is derived from the Greek word "klema," which means a climbing or branching vine. But if you come to the nursery and ask for Cle-MAH-tis, we'll know what you're looking for! This rather dramatic dark-purple to almost black flowered variety named 'Romantika' is absolutely stunning, climbing six to eight feet high (often taller) with velvety looking flowers appearing later in the  summer and into early fall. Deer allegedly are uninterested in clematis, but bees, butterflies, and even hummingbirds find the blooms attractive.

'Romantika' blooms on new wood, so in late winter or early spring, prune the stems back hard to a pair of strong buds, about one foot from the ground. This will keep your clematis tidy and will ensure blooms for the coming season.
