One can readily see why bergenia is commonly known as Elephant's Ears, but the other common name is more fun. Rubbing wet bergenia leaves between your fingers will often yield noises that are allegedly similar to a pig squeaking. 'Spring Fling' bergenia adds wonderful year-round interest to the shadier spots of the garden, with the large waxy green leaves turning a mat-purple to chocolate color in the fall and winter. Bright pink flowers emerge in the spring on tall thick stems that can stand up to 12 inches over the foliage. 'Spring Fling's foliage is more upright than its cousins, forming a fairly tight clump about a foot tall and wide. This is a great companion plant for container planters and hanging baskets, or along borders in the garden.
