Large, elephant-ear sized hairy foliage and pink springtime flowers make this unique bergenia a standout in the shade garden.

CloseOne of bergenia's common names is Pig Squeak, due to the sound made when the broad, wax-like leaves are rubbed between one's fingers. That isn't appropriate for 'Dumbo' bergenia because of its round, downy leaves that can grow up to 14 inches across, in fact, Dumbo-sized. Many sources say 'Dumbo' is fully deciduous, dying back in the winter and emerging in the spring. At The Garden Corner, we saw this variety's large leaves turn a dark red in the fall, fully expecting them to all wither in the cold. We were surprised to see 'Dumbo' maintain a small, low-growing cluster of much smaller leaves through freezing temps - possibly a fluke, but an impressive one. We love all the varieties of bergenia for shade gardens, but consider 'Dumbo' in a class of its own.
