CloseAstilbes, or false spirea, have been a long-time perennial favorite for summer shade gardens, adding color and textural interest to the darker parts of the garden. 'Fanal' boasts crimson-red plumes that rise to two feet above foliage that emerges in the spring a bronzy red then matures to a deep green in the summer. Astilbe needs regular water and can even tolerate wet areas near ponds or in boggy spots. Use this dependable perennial in container planters, along borders, or in mass plantings. The plumes are excellent cut flowers and last long in the garden.
