CloseRed Jewel alocasia is one of those tropical plants that do well outdoors in warmer zones, but are borderline here in the Pacific NW. That said, it makes an intriguing addition to summer shade gardens where it may get some morning or all-day dappled sun. Growing slowly to about a foot tall, Red Jewel alocasia has the classic arrow-shaped leaves but with a metallic sheen, ranging in color from bronze to red to deep maroon. It's a perfect candidate for growing in container planters so it can be brought indoors when the temps dropp below 60 degrees. As an indoor resident, Red Jewel alocasia prefers higher humidity, so keep away from heater vents but place in a well-lit room. Alocasias seem to slow down in the winter when grown indoors, so don't overdo with the watering. As is true of all alocasias, this one is NOT pet-friendly.
