Thought some houseplants will bloom indoors, the flowers are often small or unremarkable, even ugly (think the rat-tail blooms on peperomias), so it's always a treat when the flowers are especially showy. The Box-leaf Lipstick Vine is a gorgeous plant in and of itself with shiny boxwood-like leaves lining downward arching stems. Given the right amount of light (indirect and natural or artificial), fiery orange flowers will bloom at the tips of stems. Though this specimen can be grown outdoors in the summer in shade or dappled light, it must be brought indoors as the weather cools. As a plant that grows on trees in its native habitat, the Box-leaf Lipstick Vine needs well-draining soil and not much fertilizer. The arching branches makes this houseplant an excellent choice for hanging baskets and though non-toxic to pets, will keep it out of the reach of curious/chewing animals.
