Beautiful dark purple, serrated foliage can eventually form a shrub four to five feet tall and almost as wide. Flower spikes tower over the foliage in late summer.

CloseFormerly named Cimicifuga simplex, and also known as bugbane (the flowers' fragrance is apparently objectionable to some insects), the deep purple, lacy foliage of 'Hillside Black Beauty' is striking by any name. Though it may take a few years to reach its mature size, bugbane can grow to four or five feet tall and just about as wide. Tall fragrant white flower spikes can add another foot or two to the overall height in late summer. Though 'Hillside Black Beauty' is typically a shade garden specimen, it can easily handle morning sun, or all day filtered sun.
