Its signature red bark may be well hidden in the summer by pale green leaves edged in red, but just wait until those same leaves turn a rich yellow before falling from the tree in the autumn!

We often regard Japanese maples as a "three-fer," offering fresh, different looks in the spring/summer, fall, and winter, all in one tree. 'Sango Kaku,' aka Coral Bark Japanese maple, is a classic example of this, with its vibrant red bark and varying leaf colors throughout the year. Spring growth emerges a pale green edged in red that may become more pronounced as summer progresses. As the temperatures drop in the fall, the leaves become a bright golden yellow, standing in stark contrast against the red bark. And once the leaves fall, gardeners are left with graceful branches of red.

While Japanese maples need sun for their best colors to emerge, leaves may scorch on blistering hot days, so some protection during the hottest time of the day is usually recommended. Japanese maples do well in large containers, but again, they will need vigilant watering during heat waves, something that has become somewhat routine here in the Pacific NW.
