Named Harp String Japanese maple for its unusual, thread-like leaves that emerge green tinged with red in the spring, stay green in the summer, then turn a brilliant yellow in the fall.
Available in store
CloseJapanese maples do well in the Pacific NW and are often the centerpiece of smaller home gardens. 'Koto-no-Ito,' or Harp String maple, is an unusual, ultra-narrow-leafed variety with a dense structure, creating a beautiful, somewhat rounded profile. Its slow-growing nature (usually less than six inches per year) makes it an excellent choice for large container planters or as the focal point in a courtyard or patio. Varying in width from mere millimeters to almost a centimeter wide, the deeply cut leaves are green in the summer then take on fabulous fall colors before dropping. A bright green bark contrasts nicely against the fall colored leaves and adds seasonal interest.
One caveat - Japanese maples have endured our "normal" Pacific NW summers with ease, but recent spikes in temperatures have resulted in scorched leaves and premature leaf drop. That said, consider placing this lovely maple where it may get some protection from the late afternoon sun.
