This flowering maple doesn't look like much in the spring, but warmer weather will trigger a huge growth spurt and countless lantern-shaped blooms.

CloseFlowering maples are named as such because of the fresh green, maple-leaf like foliage and the lantern-shaped flowers that appear in late spring and continue up until fall freeze. Abutilon magapotamicum 'Red' flowers have reddish-orange petals laced with deeper red veins and hang, almost chrysalis-like, from dark brown calyxes and stems. Don't expect them to open fully; hummingbirds love these colorful, tube-shaped flowers that are rich in nectar. Depending upon the environment, 'Red' can grow quickly to three feet and may even double that height in a season. Flowers appear on new wood, so the more 'Red' grows, the more flowers the shrub will have. Arching branches can be pinched back to encourage bushier growth, or they can be woven into a lattice or other support.
A deciduous shrub in the Portland Metro area, it needs protection from freezing soil, so mulch well or consider planting another shrub next to it that will cover the root area. Cut back branches by half after all danger of frost is past.
