Colleen,
I have seen heather grow nicely under those harsh conditions but I think it's a unique set of circumstances...(just enough sun, extra water). I would advise against it. Some better options? Try a bed of hellebores! They can handle the fact that the pines trees are hogging any water and nutrients. There are other options too. Keep an eye on the videos!

Hi Becca!
I betcha that you have a Camellia japonica! (It's just a guess.) Amazing how they defy any weather don't they?

Hi Terri!
This year has been a great year for flowering plums for some reason...It seems like we're getting an extra long show! (Or is it just me?) Great choice of tree, by the way...It's called a Dawn Redwood if anyone needs to know..

I have some pine trees with pretty intense root systems and I want to plant something under them. Do you think heather would be a good choice??

Thanks!

When the pulps start to break the surface and my climbing rose starts to fill out. I also have an unknown kind of shrub with waxy leaves and big red flowers that are the very first plant in my yard to bloom. It blooms when most other pants are just starting to wake up.

I feel Spring is on it's way when I see my flowering plum turn bright pink! I also start seeing new needles on my dicidious redwood tree.
